Qualitative research with children and young people is becoming increasingly common in the market research industry. Young people offer a unique and genuine perspective, and as they become a crucial demographic for research, their opinions are more valuable than ever. However, conducting qualitative market research with children is a sensitive area and must be done in line with the Research Society guidelines to ensure their well-being and prevent any potential exploitation, distress, or harm.
Important research society guidelines:
- If the child is under 14, the parent needs to stay on the premises and parental consent must be obtained.
- If the child is 14-17 years of age, they can take part without parental consent so long as the topic isn’t of a sensitive nature, but we recommend obtaining parental consent for research of all topics for 14- 15 year old participants.
